The Power ladies of style

White House goes Indian
The fashion police have given Michelle Obama thumbs up for her sense of style. Tuesday night was no exception for her. At the first state dinner hosted by President Obama in honour of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Michelle dazzled in a gown by Indian-born US-based designer Naeem Khan.

The silver-sequined strapless gold and cream gown, the creation of Indian-born US-based designer Naeem Khan, was crafted at the designer's family factory in India with 40 people working on it.

The US First Lady has been known to favour less-known names over big ones, in the world of fashion. Naeem Khan, who has been on the fashion scene since 2003, will undoubtedly became a name to reckon with after dressing Michelle Obama for the first state dinner hosted by the Obamas.

Mrs Obama used a light shawl with the gown which swept the floor, giving it a traditional, feminine look. The look is different from the 'free-fashion' and sometimes controversial look favoured by the First Lady. Her shimmering gown was accessorised with a pair of oversized chandelier earrings and a stack of glittering gold and diamond bangles on her left arm.

Complementing Michelle's dazzling style was Gursharan Kaur, wife of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. She was dressed in an elegant black sari with an elegant red border. Ms Gursharan Kaur always wears saris for formal occasions. She is usually seen in Kanjeevaram silk saris with a matching sleeved blouse of the same colour. The Obama state dinner on Tuesday night saw her keeping to her traditional style and elegance.

Ms Gursharan Kaur's accessories were limited to an elegant string of pearls and a few bangles. Pearls appear to be her favourite since she is spotted in them in most formal occasions.

Ms Gursharan Kaur is usually spotted with her hair in a neat bun. On Tuesday night, Michelle Obama wore subdued make up and piled her hair on top.

Earlier in the day, Michelle Obama wore a skirt designed by Indian-American designer Rachel Roy. It was a stunning knee-length outfit. It was beige silk with stars on the sweater.
