YSR's son, wife unlikely to contest from Pulivendula

Times Of India
NEW DELHI: Congress is unlikely to field the wife or the son of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajsekhara Reddy from Pulivendula assembly constituency. The seat, however, would go to the Reddy family.

Pulivendula fell vacant with YSR's death and a byelection is scheduled for December 19.

YSR's son Jaganmohan Reddy has been keen to fill his father's place given his ambitions in state politics. A campaign that Jagan be made chief minister had fizzled out after discussions between him and party chief Sonia Gandhi.

However, Jagan wants to dig his roots in the state to become more acceptable to the local unit and assembly membership could have been a strong step in that direction.

But Congress has decided against giving him the ticket. Sources said even YSR's wife Vijayalaxmi is unlikely to contest.

This brings to focus the candidature of Jagan's cousins and uncles. YSR represented the constituency six times while his brother Y S Vivekananda Reddy won from the seat twice. Another family member Y S Purushotham Reddy represented the constituency once.
